Why So Few Christians in Japan?

With Christianity thriving rapidly around Asia, Japan has a strikingly low percentage of Christian population, with an estimate of around 1% to 2% of the overall population. Why is this the case, despite Christianity having been introduced to Japanese culture centuries earlier? This article from Christian Post offers one speculation. What do you think?
